MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com)--If you think catching a plane out of Memphis is ridiculously expensive, you're right.
A new study by the U.S. Department of Transportation revealed Memphis and Cincinnati are the priciest airports in the country. The average ticket price at Memphis International is $476.22. That's a 9% increase over a year ago. Atlantic City, NJ, had the lowest at $205.
It's also becoming more difficult to get a convenient flight out of Memphis. Delta eliminated 25% of its Memphis flights this year, and more cuts are expected next year.
Nationally, average domestic air fares rose to $370 in the second quarter of 2011, up 8.5 percent from the average fare of $341 in the second quarter of 2010.
Fares are based on the total ticket value which consists of the price charged by the airlines plus any additional taxes and fees levied by an outside entity at the time of purchase. Fares include only the price paid at the time of the ticket purchase and do not include other fees, such as baggage fees, paid at the airport or onboard the aircraft.
