MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - The city of Memphis is dropping its federal lawsuit challenging the state's voter identification law.
Lawyers for the city have submitted a notice of voluntary dismissal of the lawsuit filed in the Middle District of Tennessee in Nashville.
The city had sued Secretary of State Tre Hargett and Tennessee Coordinator of Elections Mark Goins, claiming that photo IDs issued by the Memphis public library system should be allowed to be used by voters as a valid form of identification for the Aug. 2 election.
After a federal judge denied that claim, Memphis attorneys then challenged the constitutionality of the state law requiring Tennessee voters to present state-issued photo IDs before being allowed to vote.
The notice to dismiss was filed last Thursday.
