MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - The union representing Memphis sanitation workers has agreed that the city can move to automated garbage trucks.

The Commercial Appeal reports that in 2005, the city and the union agreed not to modernize the city's garbage trucks, which require two or three workers. That move saved jobs but cost taxpayers millions of dollars.

Chad Johnson is the executive director of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 1733.

He said he hopes the more efficient trucks will allow the city to bring trash collection routes that have been outsourced back under municipal control.

The union first earned recognition from the city in 1968, shortly after the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated while visiting Memphis to support a sanitation workers' strike.

SteveTapp you're a jackazz, he is supporting you white people and doing whatever you'll ask, but someone that sits high and looks low will take care of him and you'll too. Vote2012 yes those the trucks there talking bout bring in. That means more jobs will be lost, but the damn city still want the same amount of taxs to be paid from the citizens, not going to happen. Really what is Azz Kissing Warton doing in office, his wife needs to be there instead of sorry spineless azz. Warton you got some explaining to do on judgement day. As far as the union rep you to going to have to explain why you took food out of the mouth of GOD's children for a machine. We don't need more garabe trucks that reach out an pick up the trash, we need men and women that way if something goes wrong with the cart they can try and fix it, but no just take our tax money and steal it and do what every you'll want. This got to be the sorriest city to live in. Down south were you get put out.

I hope their not talking about the same trucks that tear up garbage cans and then they just dump them on the street when finished emptying instead of slowly placing them back on the curb.
