MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Homicides in Memphis are down, but not by much. Memphis Police say 74 people have been killed so far this year compared to 75 at this time last year.

One of the homicides committed this year took place on the 4200-block of Boyce Avenue around 2:45 p.m. on July 11th. Officers found 46-year-old Shawn Marbury shot and killed in his home.

Norman Dorsey, whose mother-in-law lives next door to Marbury, said, "Shawn was a great person, a good person." He said Marbury always looked out for his neighbors and his mother-in-law too. "He was real helpful in the community, a handy man, fixing things for elderly people," Dorsey said, adding, "he would do anything for you."

Marbury became one of 74 people murdered in Memphis so far this year. 64 of those murders have been deemed criminal by the Memphis Police Department. That's four more than the city had at this time last year.

The President of the Memphis Police Association, Michael Williams, told abc24.com, "The homicide rate is not a surprise to me… We have convicted felons that can't find jobs so they revert back to what they know."

17 homicides committed in Memphis this year, including Marbury's, remain unsolved.
