MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) – Memphis is getting better; at least according to Forbes Magazine. Forbes reports in its latest issue that Memphis is no longer among the ten worst cities in America.
A year ago, the Bluff City was number six, this year it has moved down the list ten spots to number sixteen.
Why?
Well, if you take the time to look it’s really not that hard to figure out why. There’s plenty of good stuff to do and see in Memphis.
Nobody knows that better than Kerry Crawford, who writes the
ilovememphisblog.com for the Memphis Convention and Visitors Bureau.
“Memphis is so insular in a lot of ways,” Crawford told abc24.com, “if you know where to look, there’s so much to do.”
Crawford does like to look for ‘off the beaten path’ things to do.
“My favorite is roller derby,” Crawford said.
That’s surprising considering how slight she is.
“Yeah, yeah, yeah,” Crawford responded, “I’m boney and it hurts (laughing).”
The list of things to do in Memphis is long; including Sun Studios where everything started for Elvis Presley. The sign on the door says it all: “It’s Legendary.”
Of course, if you go to Sun Studios, you have to go to Graceland.
The Orpheum Theater brings in an excellent program of Broadway shows like “Memphis the Musical” and “The Million Dollar Quartet.”
An old Broadway musical is entitled “A Funny Thing Happened On the Way To the Forum”; the stuff that happens inside the FedEx Forum may not be funny, but it sure is fun, just ask fans of the Memphis Tigers and Memphis Grizzlies.
AutoZone Park is the best minor league baseball stadium in America and the Triple “A” home of the World Champion St. Louis Cardinals.
If you want to party, everybody flocks to Beale Street; and nothing says Memphis like Stax music.
It’s not all fun and games. St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is dedicated to saving the lives of children around the world, something in which Memphis can take great pride.
“There is a ton to do,” Crawford told abc24.com, “and it’s just a matter of taking the initiative and looking for it.”
When it comes to eating, Memphis is famous for its barbecue, and there’s no place better than the Rendezvous.
And what could be a cooler way to end a fun day in Memphis than by watching the march of the world famous Peabody Ducks.
“I think it’s really cool that the ducks are in a hotel walking on a red carpet like some celebrity,” said nine year old Leah, who was visiting from Alabama.
Leah’s right, it really is cool. And there are a lot of really neat things to do in Memphis. This was just a partial list.
So, don’t get caught up in the negative; take Kerry Crawford’s suggestion, go outside your neighborhood, have fun, and take pride in the “good stuff.”
