MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP, abc24.com) - Memphis police officials say they have fired an officer who was arrested after he was shot and told investigators a false story about the incident.
Police spokeswoman Alyssa Macon-Moore says Sgt. Norman Benjamin was fired for violation of departmental rules of truthfulness and personal conduct.
Benjamin was arrested Sept. 28 and charged with false reporting, solicitation to commit first-degree murder and unlawful sale, loan or gift of a firearm.
Benjamin was shot in the abdomen Sept. 3. Authorities say he told investigators he was shot in his car by a Hispanic man, but that story ended up being false. Authorities still have not said who they believe shot Benjamin.
Benjamin is being held on $75,000 bond.
