MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Shelby County Sheriff's deputies arrested a Memphis Police officer after a reported fight with her boyfriend.
The sheriff's office notified an MPD supervisor just before 4:00am on February 4, 2012 that they had a Memphis officer in custody. Investigators stated that 40-year-old Amanda Wakham was arrested on the 12000-block of Macon in Fisherville after a physical altercation with her boyfriend.
When deputies arrived on the scene, Wakham's boyfriend stated they had gotten into an argument because she was kissing another woman in front of him. He said as the argument escalated, Wakham hit him in the head with a kettle ball weight and a large decorative candle, according to the police affidavit. Wakham fled the scene on foot before officers arrived, but was apprehended a short distance away after she fired two shots from a handgun. While being placed under arrest, Wakham also damaged the squad car's radar housing and antenna.
She was charged with Aggravated Assault and Vandalism under $500.
Amanda Wakham has been with the Memphis Police Department since February 2001. She was already relieved of duty for an unrelated incident in April 2011; Wakham remains on unpaid leave pending the outcome of the investigations.
