MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Some quick thinking by Memphis Police officers led to the birth of a healthy baby boy on November 27, 2011.

Officers were called to a domestic disturbance at Chickasaw Oaks Apartments just before 11:00pm. As they were leaving the scene, they saw a 26-year-old woman in labor lying on the ground in need of an ambulance. As officers were assisting the woman, it was apparent that the baby was not going to wait for an ambulance to arrive.

Officer Melanie Medlock put on gloves and moved the woman into position for delivery, while the other officer held a flashlight. As the baby's head appeared, Medlock was able to maneuver the umbilical cord around from the baby's neck and successfully deliver the little boy with no injuries.

The Memphis Fire Department arrived a short time later, and the mother and newborn child were transported to St. Francis in non-critical condition.

This is just one of many examples of how MPD helps the citizens of Memphis on a daily basis. I am glad to hear that Mom & baby are doing fine. Excellent work Ofc. Medlock!
