An off-duty Memphis Police Officer was found shot and killed in his home in Frayser.

It happened in the 3400 block of Shiloh in Frayser near North Watkins.  Police say they were called to the scene of a burning car in the 1600 block of Winston around midnight, Monday, January 28, 2008.  According to investigators, the car belonged to 51 year-old Lieutenant Ed Vidulich.  Detectives say when police arrived at the officer’s home, they found him shot to death in his kitchen.

Police do not yet know why the officer was shot.

Memphis Police Director Larry Godwin says this case is very personal for him.  Godwin says he and Vidulich have been friends for a long time.  The two men went to the police academy together and have been on the force since 1979, Director Godwin says.  Godwin told reporters he and Vidulich shared some great memories and were looking forward to their grandchildren playing together.

Investigators say his wife was at work at the time of the shooting.

Mr. Ed was a wonderful man all around. He cared about helping people, not just receiving a paycheck. My prayers are with his family and all the other's whose lives he touched. I love you, Mr. Ed. -Paula

Lt. Ed Vidulich was a awesome man and an even better police officer. I worked with him for a short time at the delta fair. The ITT Tech Police Explorer Unit would like to thank him for his time help and laughter he gladly gave us! We only wish we could be like him!

This was probably an assassination by someone he knew biven they didn't mention forced entry, struggle etc. Looking at this guy I can't believe some punk homeboy just busted in and capped him. He doesn't look like someone to play with. I wonder what his previous duties were before the harbor patrol? Investigating traffic accidents city official's relatives were involved in? Given the Main Street Sweeper operation the possibilities abound. Normally when cops are found shot in the kitchen they are "cleaning their gun". (For insurance purposes - the rest of us are just said to have committed suicide.) The burning car was either a nice touch on his part or he was assassinated.

He was a person of good character, someone who could make you laugh when you really needed to, also a person who had more than a "Whatever" attitude. Ed was a great attribute to the Memphis Police Department and stood for his job. He has been a life-long friend to my family. We will miss him greatly. ***Big Ed will never be forgotten*** Chasity Perez
