MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Wednesday marks the first day of Kwanzaa. The week-long celebration honors African heritage.

It recognizes core principles, which include unity, self-determination, responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith.

Memphis Kwanzaa International in Whitehaven is busy getting ready for the first night of festivities, which focuses on unity.

According to Dr. Kaia Naantaanbuu-Jones, President of Memphis Kwanzaa International, "We will have spoken word, dancing, spoken word poetry as well as entertainment for tonight."

Wednesday night's Kwanzaa celebration begins at 6 p.m. at the Memphis Kwanzaa International building located at 1539 Elvis Presley Blvd.

Kwanzaa was first celebrated in the U.S. in 1966.

So many ignorant comments. You all are pitiful. I attended this event and was very impressed at the amount how well organized and encouraging it was. I celebrate kwanzaa with my family every year and have found that the principles are well worth discussing as a family. I think before you pass judgement and display a complete lack of decorum you should probably think about it and then just remain silent.
