MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - The Bass Pro Superstore inside the Pyramid is supposed to be good for downtown, however many people have a problem with the signage slated to appear on the old 'Tomb of Doom'.
The Design Review Board approved the design of the exterior for the Bass Pro Shop at the Pyramid in Memphis with some reservations.
The typical Bass Pro Shop has a wood log cabin look, but the city is looking for a more modern-meets-rustic look, with more glass and less log.
"What we asked them to do was really look at the amount of wood versus the amount of really modern design that the Pyramid is and try to kind of work with us to make something that looks a little bit more fitting to the pyramid exterior," said design board member Greg Price.
Another decision made, an American flag will fly above the Pyramid. The one thing that didn't fly was the giant signs. Bass Pro designs submitted to the city include 90 foot by 66 foot oval signs on each side of the Pyramid.
"I just think there could be a better implementation of signage that would get the companies point across in a way that doesn't leave such a mark right on the city," said Memphis resident Thomas Sixbey.
The giant signs are 100 times larger than what's allowed by code. The Design Review Board can make exemptions but if they do, it would be the largest exemption it has ever made.
"There's so much signage that we really can't handle in one hour, there's a lot of stuff to consider," said Greg Price.
The Design Review Board will meet again on March 18th to make a final decision.
