MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - The Red Cross is sending a pair of Memphians to New York to help recovery efforts after Hurricane Sandy.
Candace Dandridge and Kenneth Brown leave for New York on Saturday, January 26. They say while most people have forgotten about the devastation of Sandy, there are still thousands of people affected by the storm.
"Most people think that once a disaster strikes and it ends that that's the end of it," Brown told abc24.com. "But we've found out through situations like this and Katrina, the Tennessee floods, people are hurting months and sometimes years after the same incidents."
Dandridge and Brown will help storm victims' long term recovery, as well as temporary needs like food and housing.
More than a thousand Red Cross workers are still on the ground in New York.
The Red Cross operates food stations and mobile food units for Sandy victims. It also supports food banks that provide more than 60,000 meals a day for those hard hit by the storm.
The Memphis volunteers will be in New York for two weeks.
