MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP, abc24.com) - The legislative bodies in six Shelby County suburban cities will take up final readings of proposals to start local school systems.

The Commercial Appeal reports that at meetings on Tuesday, the boards in Collierville, Arlington, Millington, Bartlett, Germantown and Lakeland will make final decisions about whether to put a vote on local schools on the Aug. 2 ballot.

If the proposals are adopted, voters in the suburban cities will decide whether to operate municipal school systems and avoid becoming part of the unified Memphis and Shelby County schools, which combine in August 2013.
