MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Memphis Tigers fans looking forward to Big East action may find themselves severely disappointed.
"I just don't like the whole idea," said Tiger fan Jonathan Bailey.
"I think the name change sounds ridiculous to me, especially as a basketball fan," said Tiger fan Carrie Conner.
Memphis Tiger fans are not too happy about the league changes. The Tigers managed to get into the Big East conference over a year ago.
"I mean the point of moving from Conference USA is so we can get in a conference more competitive so it defeats the purpose of moving," said Tiger fan Ricky Smith.
That's because Big East officials suddenly announced the conference is going out of business on June 30th. The announcement came after seven Catholic schools decided to leave and form their own conference, taking the Big East moniker with them.
So, it looks like the Memphis Tigers will be left in something to be called the America 12 conference, being put together by soon to be former Big East bigwigs.
While some Tiger fans may not like the change, the Voice of the Tigers, Dave Woloshin, believes otherwise.
"This new league is going to be a much better league no matter what, and frankly the University of Memphis had an invite into the Catholic 7, which will be the Big East, but they couldn't go because that's not football, that's just basketball."
