MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Three people were severely burned in a fire at the Valero Refinery in South Memphis on March 6. This is the third time in two years that fire has broken out at the Memphis compound.
Lt. Wayne Cooke with the Memphis Fire Department said the plume came as a result of a fire that started at a crude oil unit contractors were working on. "Three were transported to The MED in critical condition. One with 90% burns, one with 70% and one with 30%."
This isn't the first time a fire has done damage and caused injury at the Memphis facility. Last August production came to a halt after a fire started at another crude oil unit. Nobody was hurt in that fire.
Three people were injured during a fire there in April of 2010. A Valero employee suffered burns over 45% of his body.
Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the fire.
