MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP, abc24.com) - A proposed bill that would add a .50-cent tax onto Beale Street bar tabs doesn't have the support of either the merchants on the famous Memphis street or the city that would collect the tax.
The bill, sponsored by Sen. Reginald Tate and Rep. John DeBerry, both Democrats from Memphis, would have tacked on a 50-cent "historic landmark preservation fee" to every $50 spent on Beale Street for preservation, tourism and improvements.
But Beale Street Merchants Association president Ty Agee told The Commercial Appeal that they don't support the bill and the city's legislative liaison said the bill was never presented to the city.
Tate said he was told by a lobbyist that the merchants supported the bill, but now it's likely dead for the year.
