MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Mid-Southerners woke up to snow Wednesday morning. About an inch of snow fell in Memphis, making for wet conditions out on the roads.

The snowfall stopped later that morning, and what it left behind was wet and slick roads.

Early morning commuters were treated to a winter wonderland. The scenery was beautiful; driving conditions on the other hand, not so much.

Crews with the Shelby County Public Works Department hit the streets at 4 a.m. Their goal was to make sure the roads and bridges were safe for commuters in case they iced over.

According to Darren Sanders with Shelby County Public Works, "What we want to do is get the salt on there to help melt the snow and ice and the cinder helps you with traction to get over the bridges and overpasses, which was our main goal overnight getting overpasses and bridges done."

Sanders said Shelby County deployed five salt trucks. Those trucks and their crews were still out working throughout the day.
