MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Unhappy with the results of this year’s presidential election, people in nearly two dozen states have started online petitions requesting permission to secede from the union. That list includes all three Mid-South states.

Ironically, those petitions were submitted to a White House website called “We The People.”

Twenty-five thousand signatures are required by mid-December for each petition to even be considered. As of Monday, November 12, Texas already had more than 27,000 signatures.

While the Mid-South states trailed that total considerably, the petitions were beginning to garner attention.

“People are crazy,” said Memphian Rebecca Brigg, “you never know what they’re going to come up with.”

What people in 22 states have come up with, including Tennessee, Arkansas and Mississippi, are petitions asking permission to secede from the United States of America.

“I think people are very unhappy with the election,” said Art English, “and feel their tax money will be going to a federal government that will be insensitive to their needs.”

English is a political science professor at the University of Arkansas- Little Rock.

Petitioners quote this constitutional language: “whenever any form of government becomes destructive, it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it.”

“This is just anger and frustration.” said Van Turner, the Shelby County Democratic Party Chairman.

Turner is a fervent supporter of President Obama; the petitioners- not so much.

“I would hope that they would come to their senses,” Turner told abc24.com, “and understand that we’ve already fought a well-noted war over whether or not states can secede. The year is 2012, not 1865.”

As of November 12, Tennessee had more than 9,500 online signatures, Arkansas had about 6,700 and Mississippi had nearly 7,500.

“You can’t please everyone,” Memphian Amanda Radke told abc24.com, “but we’re all supposed to be Americans. We should all unite behind what the decision is-whether that’s what you wanted or not.”

And that is exactly Turner’s point.

“At the end of the day we should all be Americans,” said Turner, “and just move forward.”

“Trying to secede from the union sounds a little crazy,” Briggs told abc24.com.

Rather than secede, most people were proponents of exercising the ultimate power to vote.

“In four years things will be different,” said Briggs.

So, can a state simply secede from the union? The short answer is no. That was settled by the Civil War. However, states can do things like divide; Texas has the right to split into five different states.

The last time something like that happened, West Virginia was created in 1863. But, no matter how many divisions might occur, all states would still be part of the union.

AGAIN, the old standard of "racism" when you don't have facts to support your claims. How LAME. B.O. has actually surpassed carter as the worst "president". (http://savingtherepublic.com/blog/2012/09/allen-west-obama-surpassed-carter-as-weakest-president/) I am truly amazed our military has not taken over. It was clearly evident B.O. was afraid to let them all get their votes in. He KNEW how they would vote. (http://nation.foxnews.com/2012-election/2012/11/05/thousands-troops-may-not-get-vote)

I think BO getting re-elected is fantastic! When he drives this country into the ground, who are the going to blame then? The appologetic worm has already show his TRUE feelings for this once great nation, & for capitalism (EXCEPT when it comes to golf, or sending the wife on lavish taxpayer funded vacations OUT of the country). When you arrange for someone with no experience to be snuck into an office they have not earned, you find yourself in the shape we are in NOW. We need a COUP.

The racism of yesteryear has come full circle in our county. The entire world embraced our choice of a black President four years ago and most nations of the world still support him. The fringe elements of Republican sect have crept through into the mainstream once again with conservative mouthpieces planting the seeds of hate. The only doubt lies here at home rooting from bigotry. Watch the white hands paint Obama in Blackface at http://dregstudiosart.blogspot.com/2012/10/bamboozling-obama.html

@LLT777 how arrogant can you possibly be? Since you are apparently the voice of God, please share more of your divine wisdom. People like YOU are why religion is failing and the entire world is fleeing from religion. Do youself and the rest of the world a favor and let God speak for himself.

Obama is white too, so why do blacks seem to forget this? Romney's not the answer, but he's better than socialism by far.Why didn't the Christians vote biblical instead of color? God doesn't approve in abortion and gay marriage that's a given. Those that voted anti-biblical will surely answer for it!

The fact of the matter is Americans believe their voice was not heard in the election. The electoral college is as much a joke as the BCS Championship. The power of 15 states that Obama won is more powerful than the 22 that Romney won. Not to mention How many soldiers in the swing states were not allowed to cast their ballot. No one is saying Obama is to blame most Americans are upset because they feel their voice is not being heard. Just like the way the Obama care act was "STRONGARMED" through the legislative process and members were blocked from voting. Americans, All Americans should be angry that the Government basically does not give a DAMN what the American people want

Thats whats wrong with our country memblackrights people don't learn from the sin of the past people like you are voting for obama because you consider him black not because he is qualifed!! How racist are you then you make it worse by assuming the majority of the people wh have issue with Obama are white which makes you even more racist you seek to take the rights of other on the basis that the things they say or do are based on there own racial beliefs well take a look in the mirror you have become the demon you are on here ranting about maybe even worse... and while I agree bush messed this country up Obama has done nothing to fix it he promised change and the only change I see is a descent most ppl felt there was no good choice so they voted for the same old same old the other half voted with the belief that someone new untested might shed a new light on the issue facing America. What America needs is a revolution a returning back to its founding principle which is a nation under God..So get of your hypocritical high horse and fight for all ppl rights not just black folks I myself am mixed race the same as Obama and you Degrade the man anytime you bring race into the conversation be you white or be you black or yellow judge a man on his character not the color of his skin because to do anything else makes you ignorant

memblackrights, to say that white americans never wanted a black man to lead them, I don't think that's an accurate statement. When Obama was first elected, he had something like 63% of the votes. I think the percentage of blacks in the country is 13%. The math doesn't add up. Couldn't it be that they don't like his policies instead?
