MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Over fifty teenagers and young people took an abstinence vow in a covenant ceremony at Scenic Hills Baptist Church. The teens made a pledge to remain virgins until after they're married.

6th grader Kira Robertson told abc24.com she took the pledge because "I want to be the right person for that man."

8th grade student Bernie Louis said "I want to set a standard for all young men."

Tretarius McCain, a 7th grader at Ida. B. Wells Academy, also took the pledge. He says he knows people may think he'll never be able to keep his promise but he's determined to prove them wrong. He told abc24.com, "I want to beat the statistics, put an end to it."

Dr. Brenda Caldwell is the facilitator of the Preventative Awareness Series that teaches kids to abstain from sex. She says her goal is to let the kids know "they can overcome, they can rise up, they can set standards for positive peer pressure."

Good luck with that foolishness. At best, you've just undermined your religion by forcing these kids to lie in the house of God.
