SOUTHAVEN, MS -- They're revving up for a big show of support for our Mid-South military in Southaven.
On Saturday, October 6, the Mid-South Rally for the Wounded Warrior Project will be paying tribute to local veterans who've sacrificed themselves for our freedom. Organizers want every one of them to know they aren't forgotten.
It's promising to be a day of fun. 'You're in for a ride," says co-founder Amy Marek.
They're expecting five to six hundred motorcyclists, hosting all day concerts and for a donation, offering rides on a Vietnam-era military helicopter.
'The Army Aviation Museum out of Atlanta is bringing it up tonight. They'll fly all day tomorrow from 9 to 6. It's famous from Vietnam. "A lot of vets will say 'Oh yea, I've spent plenty of time in a Huey,'" Marek says.
The main event for the rally, though, is to show the 12 guests of honor how much their sacrifice and service means.
"The military can only do so much for these guys medically," Marek tells abc24.com. "Wounded Warriors takes them so much further as far as the mental part of what they have to deal with locally."
A dozen vets from Tennessee, Mississippi and Arkansas will be at center stage Saturday night.
"The Wounded Warrior project gives them another name other than a handicapped person. It gives them a title of dignity."
"Think about the freedoms we take for granted every single day," says Lisa Wade with Southern Thunder Harley-Davidson. The business is offering a thousand dollar prize for the motorcycle run.
"Come rain or shine," Wade says. "Come on out and ride because I can promise you the soldiers fight for us regardless of the weather."
The prize is a little extra incentive but nothing compared to what the project's veterans have paid.
