MILLINGTON, Tenn. (AP) - Millington officials are moving to wash their hands of a recent annexation attempt. They say votes from the Lucy community probably cost the city a tax referendum to fund municipal schools.

The Commercial Appeal reported the Board of Mayor and Aldermen passed first reading Monday of a proposal to repeal the annexation. If the issue passes a second reading by the end of August, the area will revert to unincorporated status.

Voters in Millington overwhelming chose to start the city's own school system in Aug. 2 balloting, but a measure to raise the sales tax to fund schools failed by just three votes. City officials say the funding would have passed if non-residents' votes had not been included.

A lawsuit to stop the annexation was filed during early voting.
