MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Beauties from across Tennessee are in Memphis this week competing in the Miss Plus America pageant. The pageant is in its 10th year celebrating and showcasing the talents and beauty of plus size women.
Melissa Stamper, the Founder and Director of the Miss Plus America Pageant, said, "We don't promote obesity, we promote being healthy and happy."
Stamper said as a child, "I've always thought how cool would it be to have a plus-size pageant that's exclusive to plus-sized women." Stamper says her pageant provides comfort and helps girls and women around the country who have struggled with their self worth.
"When we first started we had a lot of girls with low self-esteem," Stamper said. "The older we get we have women who come in, they are just empowered in who they are, they're excited to make a difference in the world."
Miss Plus America will be crowned June 30th at the Memphis Hilton.
