MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Members of Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church decided to give a bit of love on Valentine's Day, giving to those who need it most.
Some times the best way to show love is to give love to those in need. Members of Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church gave of their time, hearts and money to folks around Memphis in need. Lead Associate Pastor Janae Pitts-Murdock told abc24.com the congregation used this Valentine's Day to canvas the city, surprising folks with Visa and Kroger gift cards. They passed out more than 25-thousand dollars worth of cards.
“We asked our congregation to give generously so we could go out into the community and let them know that the Boulevard loves Memphis and our congregation gave generously and gave wonderfully and everything that the congregation gave we sent out in the community,” said Pitts-Murdock.
They visited a senior citizens home, the VA hospital, even the unemployment office. Those who received a card told abc24.com the gift was a God send.
"I thought it was a blessing when they came and gave out gift cards. I was a little short on my money, so now I'll be able to get my daughter a Valentine's gift," said Charles Adams.
“This is an outstanding example of what a church can do to provide support to people who really need help,” Russell Gregory told abc24.com.
Members of the church told abc24.com it was the least they could do, spreading love on a day known for it. The outreach is part of the church's year long celebration for its 90th anniversary.
