SOUTHAVEN, MS (abc24.com) - Student-led prayer in public schools is now protected by Mississippi law. Governor Phil Bryant signed the bill into law on Thursday. This means prayer over public school intercoms, graduations, or sporting events is okay. Atheist groups are furious. They say this is unconstitutional.

The new Mississippi law allows for voluntary religious expression in public schools. Students can choose whether to participate. Atheists say the governor can expect a lawsuit soon. Parents we spoke with love the new law.

"I think it's wonderful, we pray all the time. It's the only way we get through the day so I'm absolutely for it," said a parent and supporter of the new law, Paige Self.

“I agree with the new law because I believe in God,” said another supporter, Christian Molsby.

"I think it's a great thing to allow young people to do whatever they want, plus it is freedom of religion,” said another parent, Josh Lynch.

The law says a disclaimer must be read before the prayer. Atheist groups say that's still breaking the law.

"It looks like the governor is thumbing his nose at the clear law of the land and the clear intent of the Supreme Court, which says even student-led prayer and student initiative prayers at high school events are unconstitutional,” said the CEO of the Freedom From Religion Foundation, Dan Barker.

The Wisconsin-based foundation is the same group that fought against prayer in DeSoto County schools, prayer before Memphis City Council meetings, and prayer before football games at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga. The group is not against students expressing their free speech, but against religious speech in public schools. Barker says the law is frivolous.

“It looks like the government is trying to help students use or misuse public schools as a billboard for their religious rituals,” he said.

Mississippians we spoke with have a different opinion.

"We're in the south; this is a Christian place anyway so everybody is with God,” said Molsby.

"I think that's what's great about America. You can think whatever you want to and they're not harming anybody, they're not making anybody else do it. I think that's what this country and this state is about,” said Lynch.

The law takes effect on July 1, 2013. In the meantime, the Freedom From Religion Foundation says they plan to sue any and every school that allows student prayer.

Unconstitutional? smh What about those that do want to pray together in school? We have to be left to the side so those that don't believe can get their way. If you don't believe, cover your ears. No one is forcing you. You can choose to "participate." That's like me always having to go to school and not being able to participate in what I believe because those get offended with my religion. We didn't have a choice before to be open with it. Our choice was your choice, "no prayer." Hopefully now it changes.

It never ceases to amaze me how desperate the religious are to infect the minds of children. This isn't about praying at all. It's about being heard and seen praying. These people are so dense that they don't ever seem to realize what it is they are pushing. I really hope that some kid gets up on stage and says a prayer to Yahwey, Allah, Satan, or Spiderman to show these simpletons why there is a good reason for these why government and religion are legally meant to be separate.

That's Mississippi for you. Sad. The good thing is that Americans are becoming less religious and the number of adherents of the Christian Religion is shrinking. Prayer is nothing but talking to one's self.

i also agree with that. you should be taxed for education per child. sorry. that's the way it should be. squirt out another kid, your taxes go up. can't afford a 2% increase in your taxes? don't have so many kids. the problem is those who are intelligent aren't having kids because the understand the responsibility involved and choose to wait until they can afford it....much later. the opposite end of that spectrum are the poor, and (sorry to say) stupid. they don't comprehend the severity of their situation and then have several kids. especially in horn lake/southaven...the ratio of poor/stupid to intelligent/frugal is grossly mismatched.

I feel the same way about being forced to help finance government schools, even though I have no children. Keep them to yourself and don't force them down my throat.

ALSO! NO ONE CARES THAT YOU PRAY IN SCHOOL! No one ever has. But religion is like a pen is. Keep it to yourself and don't try and force down my kids throat.

You have no idea how embarrassing it is for me to tell people that I was raised in Mississippi. I grew up next to Southaven in good old Horn Lake. I remember, at a young age, the rampant apparent racism, hatred, and general bigotry that existed throughout the the state. I am absolutely disgusted by the state's constant failure to progress with the rest of society. I detested my existence in your state so much that I left. The very idea that I would pay any taxes to you made me sick. I will never do business, visit, or associate my self in any way with your state. When people ask me where I was born, I can, at the very least, look them in eyes and say Memphis, TENNESSEE! Mississippi is a total disgrace.

This is awesome! Way to go Southaven! Freedom of speech, and freedom of religion needs to be protected!! Nobody is being "forced" to participate, but there is an option...if this athesist group don't like it..they need to take their behinds back to WI where they came from and not participate!! May God Bless and protect our precious children from such groups..
