DESOTO COUNTY, MS (abc24.com) - DeSoto County is expecting a huge turnout for this fall's election. The number of people at the polls typically doubles in presidential years.

More voters mean extra long lines, which can lead to frustrations. The county's election commission is trying to keep that to a minimum.

More than 70,000 people are expected to show up at the polls this November. The larger the crowd, the more the election commission prepares.

"We've been working on getting this election ready since four months ago," says commissioner David Klein.

One of their biggest concerns is how long it takes for each person to vote.

"In the past we've had lines circling the precincts," Klein says. He adds it's not unusual for hundreds to line up to vote. The commission is trying to cut down on how long they have to wait.

"We might have 300 people at the door before they open the polls." The last thing Klein or the commission wants is angry voters.

The county is still looking for more poll workers to help man DeSoto's 38 precincts. Volunteers must be over 18 and registered to vote. Klein says give them a call at (662) 429-1309 if you'd like to help.

The commission is counting on additional hands to help speed things up.

"Hopefully the wait to vote is not going to be any longer than waiting for a good movie that you'd have to stand in line for," Klein says.
