MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - A Memphis mother is charged with murder after the Medical Examiner's office determined her 2-month-old son died from malnutrition.
The infant was unresponsive and in full cardiac arrest when he arrived at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital by ambulance just before 7 a.m. on May 2. He was pronounced dead a short time later. The Medical Examiner ruled the baby's death as a homicide.
The child's mother, 22-year-old Cornellya Kenny, was taken into custody Monday, September 24.
The child was born with a cleft palate and a cleft lip, and records show appointments were scheduled to return for corrective surgery within days of being released from the hospital. According to investigators the child was never brought back to any medical facility prior to his death.
Cornellya Kenny is charged with First Degree Murder and First Degree Murder in Perpetration of Aggravated Child Neglect. She is being held at the Shelby County Jail without bond and is scheduled to appear in court on September 26.
