MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - A Memphis mother is behind bars after she stole a Memphis Police squad car.
Cynthia Stewart had been on the run since helping her 12-year-old daughter escape from state custody. Officers were notified that Stewart and her daughter were walking in the area of Jackson and Trezevant around 1:00pm on January 8, 2012.
When cops arrived the 12 year-old daughter ran away. In the meantime, police say 3stewart hopped into a squad car and drove off. Her joy ride didn't last long; officers chased Cynthia Stewart for about 2 miles. Police surrounded the squad car in the 3200-block of Macon Road after Stewart blew on of the tires.
No one was hurt in the chase and the flat tire is the only damage to the squad car.
Both Stewart and her daughter are in police custody.
Stewart is charged with theft of property over $10,000 and is being held on $30,000 bond at the Shelby County Jail. She is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 10th.
