I was born in Orange Mound. At that time Orange Mound was bordered by Southern Ave, Deadrick Ave, Pendleton St. and Airways Blvd. Orange Mound was the first African-American owned neighborhood in America. Crime in the neighborhood was limited to a few butt kickings and a rare stabbing – almost never reported to the police. Melrose football and track & field were the common thread that rallied us. Neighborhood problems were mostly handled within the neighborhood by the young men or the church. Now it appears that Orange Mound encompasses a 3 mile radius of Central Memphis that doesn’t favor the pride and self-respect famously displayed by the residents of Orange Mound. These new Orange Mound folk don’t have the dignity and swagger that identified the originals. They have brought to our neighborhood the ugliness that makes Memphis a crime haven. Melrose sports have even gone awry.
