DESOTO COUNTY, MS (abc24.com) - It's a new year and a new goal for DeSoto County CrimeStoppers. The nonprofit wants to become more involved with the public and with local law enforcement.
Last spring, the DeSoto Sheriff's Department and CrimeStoppers talked about communicating more. They say that's going to happen starting this week.
"We're just trying to get everybody together, all the police agencies are invited welcome to come," says Larry Holland, CrimeStoppers coordinator.
The group passes tips along to five police departments and the sheriff's department. Their 13 board members meet once a month. In 2013, they're planning to have more law officers at those meetings too.
Holland says in the New Year, everyone's going to work together.
"We want to keep politics out of CrimeStoppers," Holland says. "We're just doing what's right for DeSoto County.'
"We'll talk about it to see what we can do," Sheriff Bill Rasco said last March. "Whatever it takes to make it work."
"I'm excited they want to get more involved and work with us more," adds Holland.
The focus isn't just on police and the sheriff's department, but the public too. CrimeStoppers averages about 15 calls a week, but every day is different
"I've gotten eight phone calls today," Holland tells abc24.com. While there's no typical reward, most calls average $200. Not everyone's seeking a payment though.
"The majority of people that call in to me they don't want anything," he says. "They just want the bad people picked up or the crime solved."
The number to call is 662-429-TIPS (8477). You can also submit information online at www.desotocrimestoppers.com
