MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - An off-duty Memphis Police officer was arrested and charged with DUI after he ran off the road and hit a fence near the Parkway Village area.

According to the affidavit, officers patrolling in the area saw a vehicle veer off American Way and hit the fence of a residence on the 3800-block of Capri Street in the early morning hours of January 30, 2012. As they approached the vehicle, the driver got out of the car and told them he was an off-duty officer and had fallen asleep at the wheel. He had injuries to his face and head and was placed in the back of a squad car until a unit arrived to treat him. Police noticed the smell of alcohol on the man, but he refused a BAC test. He also refused medical treatment at the scene, and was transported to The MED.

31-year-old Roger Williams was later arrested and charged with DUI and Refusal to Submit to a BAC Test. He is currently being held at the Shelby County Jail.

Williams has been with the Memphis Police Department since April 2010. He is relieved of duty with pay pending the outcome of an administrative investigation.
