MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - A Memphis police officer turned himself in for a Domestic Assault charge Wednesday evening.
An arrest warrant was issued Wednesday, January 30 by the Shelby County Sheriff's Office for Officer Lee Potts, 53, on one count of Domestic Assault - Bodily Harm. The warrant stems from an incident that occurred when Potts was off duty where a 37-year-old woman alleges the officer struck her in the face, causing visible injuries. Upon being notified of the warrant, Potts turned himself in to deputies.
According to the Memphis Police Department, Potts has been with the MPD since March 1998 and is currently relieved of duty.
“Domestic violence cannot be taken lightly. Our officers are provided annual training on how to cope with potential domestic related situations. It is disappointing to know that a moment of anger could potentially cause this officer his freedom or career,” said Director Toney Armstrong.
The case is being investigated by the Shelby County Sheriff's Office.
