OXFORD, MS (abc24.com) - Did you hear that sound? Rebel Nation is on the verge of exploding after a banner day for Ole Miss Football.
The day started with the Rebels inking the #1 recruit in all the nation, and by the end of Wednesday, Ole Miss is said to have one of the best recruiting classes in America.
"The student body is going crazy, it is awesome," said Stephen Shepard, an Ole Miss student.
The day started with Robert Knemichie announcing he was committing to the Rebels. At 6'5" and 260lbs, the Loganville, Georgia's impact was immediately felt on campus.
"I was just hoping Robert wasn't going to say University of Louisiana," Tommy Lubbet, a fan for the last 64 years, said with a laugh.
Lubbet said he could barely contain his excitement with Knemichie's decision, waking up early to watch the choice live.
"You could hear me for a mile," he said.
On campus, students were buzzing as hundreds waited outside C.M. Tad Smith Coliseum for a Wednesday night showdown between the Rebel men's basketball team and Mississippi State University.
"You could see people in classrooms looking up the signings. Guys are really excited, it is a big turn around," Chad Noflin, a student at Ole Miss said.
With Wednesday's news, there is hope. Under second-year head coach Hugh Freeze, the Rebels won seven games last year. That's up from just two the year before.
"It is a cold day in Starksville. It's all I hear," one fan said.
Taylor Gosman is from Knemichie's hometown in Georgia. Gosman said the fact Knemichie's brother Denzel already plays for the Rebels was huge in signing Robert.
"Gosh yes, everyone is so excited, and it is awesome because Ole Miss is a giant family," Gosman said, his face painted with Rebel colors.
Fans won't have to wait long to see Knemichie and the Rebels. They're scheduled to kick-off against Vanderbilt in Nashville on August 31st.
