MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - A Utah man kayaking to Costa Rica had his Mississippi River adventure cut short after his kayak and camping supplies were stolen during his stop in Memphis.

Memphis police say the victim, Davis Stewart, had tied up his kayak at a dock near the Auction Street bridge while he went to get more supplies Friday afternoon. When he returned a few hours later his kayak, valued at $1,500, was gone along with all of his gear.

After news of the theft became public, Outdoors, Inc. announced it would donate a new 17' kayak to Stewart, and collect donations for replacement camping gear at its midtown location at 1710 Union Avenue.

Memphis Mayor A C Wharton stated on his Facebook page, in part, "We are terribly sorry that this happened to David, and we are more sorry when events like this reflect poorly upon our great city."
