MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Two men are dead after a home invasion in a quiet East Memphis neighborhood. The home is on East Yates near Walnut Grove. According to police, 26-year-old Anthony Conte and 30-year-old Robert Schmidt were killed by gunfire around midnight Thursday, and the suspect is still on the run.
Neighbors believe this was an isolated incident, saying the home was targeted.
Jeanne Taylor lives in the neighborhood, her phone wouldn't stop ringing Thursday morning, "They woke me up, from Mississippi to Arkansas, wanting to know what's going on."
East Yates is typically a low crime area. Neighbors run outside, they all know each other and they all know when something goes horribly wrong. Theresa Simi lives about a mile away from the home. She heard about the double homicide Thursday morning and wanted to see the scene for herself.
"I like to think I'm in a secure area," Simi says, "But what does security mean now? You can be anywhere at anytime and something can happen."
According to police, one man broke into the home and fired multiple shots, killing Conte and Schmidt. All day family and friends have been driving through wondering if it was their loved ones who were lost. Alex Evans found relief when his grandparents answered the door across the street. Others weren't as lucky; one family member froze sobbing in her car outside the home.
Neighbors have noticed frequent traffic from the home, trash on the lawn and loud music at all hours. Taylor says, "It's drugs and alcohol, that's all this is." Her husband Glenn says they weren't surprised to find the murders happened in that home. "As soon as they sent something we knew the house. We weren't totally surprised from all the traffic going in and out."
Jeanne Taylor believes the victims were targets. "I just think whoever went in there knew what they were doing."
