CONWAY, Ark. (AP) - Police say the pilot of a small plane that crashed near the Conway airport has died.

The plane crashed Wednesday afternoon shortly after it took off from the Conway Municipal Airport. The Conway Police Department says the pilot, 65-year-old Robert Allen of Oxford, Miss., died overnight at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock.

Witnesses reported that it sounded like the plane had engine trouble shortly after it took off from the airport. Witnesses reported seeing the plane turn back toward the airport before crashing.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the crash.
