MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Memphis police took a man in for questioning Tuesday morning for multiple sexual assault cases.
Investigators released information to the public on Monday, August 20 regarding three sexual assaults that have occurred since April of this year, all of which have been connected to one suspect.
Officers located the man at a home in the Westwood neighborhood in southwest Memphis, which is the same area where two of the reported assaults happened. The third assault took place in the Berclair area near Summer Avenue and Graham Street.
“He ain’t raped nobody,” a relative of the man told abc24.com. “He ain’t raped nobody and he ain’t robbed anybody. He doesn’t have to.”
Neighbor Charlene Williams said she couldn’t help but hear the noise of police closing in on a suspect. “Yes, the helicopters were flying overhead,” she said, “…and the police were everywhere.”
This is a neighborhood of homes where the grass is cut, the houses are painted, there are flowers; it is a neighborhood where people clearly care about things. When cops swoop in to an area like this it gets their attention. When they take a neighbor into custody as a possible suspect in three rapes, it really gets their attention. “He’s a good guy,” said another neighbor, Martha Turner. “He doesn’t bother anybody.”
The man's vehicle, a black Ford Mustang, was also taken from the residence by police to their crime lab; investigators had previously stated that the same kind of vehicle was driven by the sexual assault suspect.
The man was later released without charge.
