MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - A big event was held Thursday, July 12 at the Cook Convention Center to help the homeless in the city get back on their feet.
"Project Homeless Connect" provided job assistance, health care services, housing assistance, and information on benefits like food stamps and teen care.
Memphis' legal minds also joined in to provide free legal consultations for those who feel their situation may be preventing them from getting jobs or shelter.
"What we hope to do is to provide folks with a little extra boost, toward full employment, toward housing, just a little hope," said Josh Spickler with the Shelby County Defender's Office, "Treating them with dignity, getting them a lawyer when they would otherwise have trouble getting one."
Lawyers and law students helped the attendees with old court fines, debt relief, and even looked into expunging old crimes.
This initiative is part of Memphis Mayor A C Wharton's 10-year plan to end homelessness in the city.
