MEMPHIS, TN -- More trouble at Memphis Animal Services. This time it has to do with puppies in a trash can.
For the past two weeks, Animal Services Administrator Matthew Pepper has been at the Shelby County Emergency Operations Center helping with the flood fight.
While Pepper was away, sources tell abc24.com employees took advantage of the situation. At times animals were not fed and cages were not cleaned, according to the sources.
One incident has drawn a lot of attention. Web cameras caught live puppies being dumped into a trash can.
“Just the vision of the puppies in the garbage can and them standing up looking over was pretty sad,” said Ona Cooper.
Cooper is one of the hundreds of people who viewed the scenario on the web cams.
Video showed two women dropping off a female dog and her puppies. The women took the animals back to the cage. Three days later, employees put the puppies in a trash can and wheeled them off to be killed.
The puppies were not put in the area of the shelter where they place adoptable animals, instead they were placed in the stray area.
“One of my concerns is the public is not allowed in the stray area to give those dogs a chance to be adopted,” said Cooper.
A city spokesperson said the video does not actually show the employee tossing the puppies into the trash can. The employee was disciplined for not following shelter procedure.
