MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Nearly 50 stolen guns are in the hands of criminals and police are keeping tight-lipped about the details.
The guns were stolen from a Whitehaven home Wednesday night, May 23. Police have warned officers to be cautious and be on the lookout for the stolen guns, but they're not saying anything to concerned residents.
Memphis Police aren't talking about the stolen weapons and the report is confidential, which means no one will get answers anytime soon.
Whitehaven residents are shocked at the mass of guns that are now on the streets of Memphis. Bill Reddick says, "42 guns on the streets? In the wrong hands? Somebody broke in and stole them? That makes for a dangerous situation."
Rifles, handguns and automatic weapons were stolen from the home, including AK-47's. Cliff Hunter, the owner of Tommy Branson Sporting Goods, has been selling guns since the 80's, he says already this arsenal of weapons is in the wrong hands. "Well of course they are," Hunter says, "They've been stolen, there's a criminal, of course they are. But that's a daily occurrence across the country."
Police won't say what Whitehaven neighborhood the guns were taken from or the exact makes or models. Hunter says that's because they want to protect the gun owner. "Oh there's no question about that... criminals are not real bright, they may think he's got more and try to hit him again."
However, Reddick wants answers, "Everyone should be nervous with those types of guns, who are they going to sell them to or distribute them to?"
