MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Teachers for Memphis City School teachers who live outside Shelby County are breathing a big sigh of relief.

The teachers were facing a tough decision of whether to quit their jobs or move into the county to meet residency requirements. All Shelby County employees -- which these teachers will be after the merger -- are required to live in the county.

Monday afternoon, the Shelby County Commission voted to grandfather MCS teachers in, allowing them to continue living outside the county.

The commission was considering giving the teachers five years to comply with the residency requirements. This new ordinance will be considered again for the final time in two weeks.
