MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com)--Investigators say road rage caused a fiery crash that critically injured a teen and put a Shelby County Sheriff's detective in the hospital.
The accident happened around 2:40 p.m. Monday afternoon on Airways Blvd. near Raines Rd. Investigators say Shelby County Sheriff's Detective Sgt. Trini Dean was traveling north on Airways when it was hit head on by a vehicle driven by 18-year-old Artterrance Buchanan.
According to witnesses, Buchanan was swerving in and out of traffic while driving westbound on Winchester Rd. As he headed south on Airways, a witness says Buchanan sped up behind him in the center lane. The witness says Buchanan was tailgating and taunting him just before he lost control and crashed into Sgt. Dean.
When MPD officers arrived on the scene, both cars were on fire. Officers pulled both drivers from their cars. Buchanan was transported from the scene and remians in extremely critical condition. Sgt. Dean is in stable condition with three broken ribs, a broken right wrist and two broken legs.
Investigators believe there were more witnesses to the crash and the events leading up to the crash. Anyone with information is asked to call the Shelby County Traffic Division or Crime Stoppers at 901-528-CASH.
