MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Boy scouts will be going door-to-door Saturday to collect food items for the Mid-South Food Bank.
At this time of year the shelves at the food bank start to look pretty bare, but for every $1 donated, the Mid-South Food Bank can distribute more than $4 worth of food.
"We get together with the Mid-South Food Bank every year and we do a campaign to raise food for needy adults and kids as well," stated Ty Thompson with Boy Scouts of America.
The campaign is called "Feeding a Great Need," and the scouts are eager to help.
Boy Scout Spencer Ellis told abc24.com, "I personally like to help the people who are less advantaged and to help them maybe get back on their feet."
One in five people in the Mid-South struggle with food insecurity, which is lack of sufficient food to meet basic needs. During the winter is when people start feeling the shortages of food.
According to Marcia Wells with the Mid-South Food Bank, "Our shelves are getting a little empty. We just had some big food drives this time of year and lots of them. But scouting for food is a big food drive, so it really helps to fill up the shelves."
You can help donate by stopping at one of six Kroger locations this Saturday, December 15, from 9:30 a.m. until 2 p.m.:
- Bartlett - Kirby Whitten/Stage
- Southaven - 3095 Goodman Road
- Germantown - 2735 Farmington Blvd
- Collierville - 3685 S Houston Levee Rd
- Memphis - 540 S. Mendenhall Road
- Memphis - 2835 Kirby Road
The most needed items include canned foods such as tuna, fruits, vegetables, meats, stews, and fruit juice.
Large collection bins will be on site at the different Kroger locations as well as the Boy Scouts of America Headquarters, located at 171 S. Hollywood.
"It means a lot," added Thompson. "It's very easy to forget that everyone isn't eating. When I'm blessed enough to have food everyday it's easy to kind of take for granted what you have. But to see those lit up faces, to actually see the boys help volunteer really means a lot."
