CLARKSDALE, MS (abc24.com) - A body of a Clarksdale mayoral candidate has been found in Coahoma County, Mississippi, and a person of interest is in custody.
Investigators have been searching for Marco McMillian since Tuesday morning, when his car was involved in a two-vehicle crash on Highway 49 S near Tutwiler, Miss. McMillian, 34, was not driving, but a source close to the investigation said he was possibly giving a ride to someone he knew when the situation went awry, and they were concerned for his safety.
The person driving McMillian's car at the time of the accident was airlifted to The MED.
Crews searching an area of Coahoma County along a river levee located a body Wednesday morning. Authorities later confirmed the body found was McMillian, and one person of interest is in custody. No other details concerning the case were released.
Those working on McMillian's mayoral campaign released the following statement on the news of his death:
"Words cannot describe our grief at the loss of our dear friend, Marco McMillian. The shocking news of Marco’s death is beyond difficult for us to process. We remember Marco as a bold and passionate public servant, whose faith informed every aspect of his life. Tragically, that life has been cut short. At this time of loss, we ask that you keep Marco's family and friends in your prayers."
In addition to his political aspirations, McMillian also works at New Leaders-Memphis, which is located on the third floor of the ABC 24 building. He recruits teachers and principals from all over the country to work for Memphis City Schools.
