MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - The month of September has certainly brought a mixed bag of weather to the Mid-South. Temperature swings and rounds of heavy rain arrived this month. The month started off with temperatures in the 90’s. September 5th was the hottest day with a high temperature of 99 degrees, but it didn’t set a new record. The Mid-South has had eleven days so far in the 80’s and five days with temperatures in the 70’s.
After prolonged drought this summer, the Mid-South finally received several rounds of much needed rain. The Memphis International Airport has recorded nearly six and a half inches of rain for the month so far. The average rainfall for September is only a little more than two inches. This has certainly put a dent in the drought.
Most of West Tennessee has moved into the severe drought category. Eastern Arkansas is the most improved drought-stricken area, moving from the extreme category to severe. The Mississippi Delta remains in extreme drought.
Mississippi River levels have flirted with record lows all summer. Now, the levels are showing signs of improvement. Levels have risen nearly four feet since Friday and they are forecast to remain around minus six feet through the end of the month.
