MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Graphic testimony Thursday from the nurse who examined a 2-year-old girl the night she was raped and beaten.
17-year-old James Prindle, a relative of the victim, is on trial for the crime on charges of aggravated rape, aggravated child abuse, aggravated child neglect and filing a false police report.
Nina Sublette, the sexual assault nurse that examined the 2-year-old at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital, said on that night two years ago she saw blood and lots of it.
She told jurors there was a "laceration of her lip that was actively bleeding, large amount of blood in her diaper."
Sublette said the little girl's injuries were so severe and there was so much blood, "This was a difficult exam emotionally,"
"[The victim] was crying and saying, 'No, no!' She was resisting and twisting and trying to turn."
Twenty minutes into her testimony a male juror turned to the judge and requested a break. Seconds after the jury was dismissed to the jury room, one of them started beating on the door. Judge Bobby Carter rushed to the back and asked that 911 be dialed. The male juror is a diabetic and wasn't feeling well. Judge Carter let him go home.
When court resumed, Sublette resumed describing injuries she saw.
"Her face was swollen and distorted. I had no idea what hit her in the head."
Sublette said whatever hit her had the little girl bleeding so badly, "I thought she was a red head. I didn't know she was a blond."
