MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP, abc24.com) - A lawsuit filed against Shelby County is asking a court to get involved in voter redistricting.
The suit was filed Tuesday by three county commissioners acting as ""citizens of Shelby County," according to The Commercial Appeal.
State law requires the commission to use 2010 Census data to redraw districts from which commissioners are elected. But commissioners missed a Dec. 31 deadline to redraw the existing districts.
The current districts are unbalanced because people have moved. The suit filed by Democrat Walter Bailey and Republicans Mike Ritz and Terry Roland argues that unless the court intervenes, the current unbalanced districts would be used in 2014 elections and violate the principle of one person, one vote.
The suit asks a judge to stop any election that's based on the existing districts.
