MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Shelby County Sheriff's deputies arrested one of their own after he was caught drunk in his department-issued vehicle.
Deputies responded to reports of a reckless driver near Chimney Rock and Berryhill just before 4 p.m. on Feb. 20. The driver was identified as 42-year-old William Speight, a patrolman with the Homeland Security unit. Speight was off duty at the time, but was in his department vehicle.
According to the responding deputies, Speight's speech was slurred and his eyes appeared watery. They performed a DUI field sobriety test and determined he was drunk. Speight refused a BAC test and was transported to the Criminal Justice Center.
William Speight is charged with DUI, Reckless Driving, Public Intoxication and Refusal of a BAC Test. He has since been released from the Shelby County Jail on bond, and is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 22. He has been suspended with pay pending the results of an internal investigation.
