MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Memphis Mayor A C Wharton and Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell announced a new resource to help area high school students attend community college.

The new initiative is called Memphis/Shelby Achieves, and is part of a larger non-profit organization for the state, tnAchieves. The scholarship program is open to all students, and first-generation college seekers are especially encouraged to participate.

Scholarship recipients will also receive assistance from guidance counselors and mentors.

Applications for Memphis/Shelby Achieves scholarships are available to students graduating in 2012 from all Memphis City and Shelby County public high schools.

The deadline for applications is December 9th, 2011.
