MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP, abc24.com) - City legislative boards in six suburban Memphis towns have given final approval to referendums on starting local school systems.
According to The Commercial Appeal, the legislative bodies in Arlington, Bartlett, Collierville, Germantown, Lakeland and Millington all approved on final reading proposals to opt out of a coming countywide public school system if local voters choose to start their own.
While the suburban cities have until the end of the week to present their newly approved ordinances to the Shelby County Election Commission, Arlington Mayor Mike Wissman said his city was hand-delivering it Tuesday. Others signed the ordinances at their meetings and will deliver them Wednesday.
The ordinances will put to local voters on Aug. 2 the issues of starting their own municipal school systems and raising taxes to fund them.
