MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - A popular neighborhood grocery store was destroyed after a late night fire in south Memphis.

The Lester Grocery and Deli on the 800-block of Walker went up in flames Tuesday just before midnight.

Three people lived in an apartment above the store. Investigators initially feared the worst because one of the tenants was unaccounted for, but she was later found. Everyone else made it out safely.

Neighbors, like Barbara Slusher, told ABC 24 News it's sad the popular grocery is gone.

"I was getting up on my way to work and see the neighborhood has been blocked off - It was a shock to me & my boyfriend that the store had burned down… the store had been there for years."

Investigators are still trying to determine what started the fire, but say it broke out on the first floor.
